The problem

What was in the way

High-voltage switching is a job where the consequence of an error is immediate and permanent. Training therefore has to happen away from live equipment — but classroom material teaches the procedure, not the judgement. New operators arrive on site having read the sequence without ever having had to decide anything under the conditions in which it is performed.

The approach

What we built, and why that shape

We could have quoted from the training brief. Instead we went to look: operating stations, control rooms and equipment suppliers, until we understood how the work is actually carried out rather than how it is written down. The proposal came after that, and the contract was signed against a scope that reflected the work.

  • Four elements, in the order the job happens: the work order, moving through the station, reading the instruments, operating the equipment. Training follows the shape of the task, not the shape of a syllabus.
  • The simulation permits the wrong action. A trainee can complete an unsafe sequence, see the outcome and be shown afterwards where the decision went wrong — a system that blocks the error in advance teaches nothing.
  • Equipment was modelled from what the suppliers actually ship, not from generic assets. Operators recognise their own switchgear, or they do not take the training seriously.
  • We did not build a general-purpose training platform. The subject was one class of station and one set of procedures, done properly.

The outcome

What changed

The utility gained a way to put operators through high-consequence procedures repeatedly, including the failure paths, before they stood in front of live equipment. The project was delivered against the scope agreed after the site visits — which is the part worth noting, given that it was a domain we did not know when we started.
